As part of my Grad studies in Cyberpsychology I read a lot of game, gamification, and game culture related research papers. Some are great! Some are absolute crap. Most however sit somewhere in the middle.
The great ones tend to have a few things in common. They have an understanding of games and the psychology principles that apply, they have modern experiments (a 2016 paper that talks about Gameboy usage ain't good), awareness of there own flaws, and they have a conclusion that can be built upon by academics or people in the Industry can use.
